Technologist Competency Assessment Program

ORBCoN is pleased to announce the launch of this new web-based program for managing competency assessments for Medical Technologists in Transfusion Medicine.

This new program was developed with NextMove Learning - the company that created the online course “Bloody Easy”.  “Assessment LIVE” is designed to help hospital managers track their staff participation in the program and maintain records of their competency assessments.

The objectives of the “Assessment LIVE” program are to:

• Provide questions in the field of Transfusion Medicine covering all areas of the practice guidelines developed by the College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Ontario for Transfusion Science
• Aid laboratory managers in tracking, monitoring and documenting competence of transfusion personnel in their theoretical knowledge of transfusion medicine at a basic level as well as an advanced level (where applicable)
• Help healthcare facilities meet the regulatory requirements of National Standards (CSA Z902-04 and CSTM ver 2.0)and, in the Province of Ontario, regulatory requirements for Ontario Laboratory Accreditation
• Help technologists understand the rationale of the correct answers provided to the questions through the ‘learning insights’ section
• Provide an evaluation and recognition of successful completion of the course in the form of a certificate of completion
• Aid laboratory managers in identifying areas where additional training or education may be needed and/or directed

The program consists of two separate assessments, the Basic level competency and the Advanced level competency.  Each module provides approximately 5-10 questions  on each of the following topics:

- Pre-analytical
- ABO and Rh
- Antibody screen (with optional sub-assessments for gel, solid phase or PEG)
- Antibody identification
- Compatibility testing
- Neonatal and Prenatal testing
- Blood products
- Blood collection and testing
- Reporting
- Adverse reactions
- Quality assurance

Following completion of the assessment, users can review the questions to see the correct answers and read ‘learning insights’ for each question, if desired, to increase their knowledge of the background theory for the correct answer.
