Meditech ISBT 128 Problems and Solutions

Dictionaries

Problem: Blood Type: Meditech only reads the first "2" digits of the ISBT blood type codes.

Solution: On the http://www.iccbba.org/ website you will find table #5 that outlines the blood type codes that are required. There will be some products in the new labelling system that will not have an "Rh" status (FP, cryo). Ensure that you just have ABO groups in the blood type dictionary.

Problem: Meditech only reads and populates the first "5" characters of the ISBT product codes. This will cause an issue with autologous units in that they will have the same product code as homologous units. Meditech does recognize that it is an autologous units and populates the reserved field. The problem with this is that it will affect any custom reports or NPR reports. When scanning divided products, Meditech adds a "A" or "B" to the donation number.

Solution: You may require a custom fragment DRTS #27704 to correct the ISBT donation number that appears on the issue and transfusion cards.

Problem: It seems that the CMV negative marker can scan but does not populate the marker field.

Solution: A Bar Code Term input rule is needed. Other fields that are scanning and populating the E/E other? fields are: Biohazard Y, 1st Level division, type of donation V= Volunteer homologous, 1= for autologous use only, 2= for directed use only, X= for autolgous use only, biohazardous

Check Digit issue

Meditech does have a NPR available for both Magic and Client Server that will calculate the check digit. This can be accessed through the following link. Shortcut to NPR: https://www.meditech.com/kb/Custform.ASP?urn=33797

Autologous Products

Problem: Since Meditech is unable to recognize the entire 8 digit product code, Autologous units are causing an issue. If both the red cells and plasma are received at the site, there is a problem in entering since the plasma has no Rh status.

Solution: Have the blood type dictionary for all types with no Rh status at Transfusable (All Cases)? N and Transfusable For Product (identify the products that you can transfuse with this blood type).

NB. If you set the tranfusable (All product) to N, you lose access to "Allow Emerge Iss?" (applies to C/S): Need to consider this for AB blood type.

Enter both units by scanning alone. You must scan the product code before the unit # for the second unit being entered into inventory. To note, the blood group code is what populated the "Reserved" field for Autologous. In the CBS booklet with the scannable samples of ISBT labels, only O Pos and O examples were provided for Autologous.

Report Formats

Problem: It appears that on some broadcast reports that not all the characters in the product # appear on the report.

Solution: A suggestion to check the report format to see if the column width is sufficient. Check Report Format Dictionary.
