Transfusion Medicine Contingency Planning
Blood Shortages Toolkit

In August 2008, the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care Blood Programs Coordinating Office distrubuted the Ontario Contingency Plan to Manage Blood Shortages and accompanying toolkit to all hospitals across the province with a licensed transfusion service laboratory. The purpose of this was to aid hospitals in the development of a facility specific plan to manage their blood inventory in the event of a critical shortage of blood.

On March 10, 2010 a province wide blood shortage simulation exercise was held. Twenty-seven hospitals across Ontario participated and reported on their response. A report from this exercise will be available by Fall 2010. Plans to revise the Ontario Contingency Plan for Management of Blood Product Shortages are underway to incorporate the recommendations from this exercise.
