Transfusion Medicine Contingency Planning
Blood Shortages Toolkit
The Ministry of Health and Long-term Care of Ontario is pleased to provide the Ontario Contingency Planning Toolkit to assist hospitals with the development of a plan to manage blood transfusion in the event of a blood inventory shortage.

The intent of this toolkit is to help ensure hospital plans across the province are both comprehensive and consistent.

In August 2008, hard copies of the contingency plan and toolkit will be distributed to Ontario hospital transfusion services as well as hospital emergency planning personnel.  Included in this distribution will be a CD containing templates of toolkit items that hospitals can use in developing their own facility specific Emergency Blood Management Plan.

Although no specific date has been provided for Emergency Plans to be in place, we strongly recommend that hospitals develop these individual plans in a timely manner.
